Question:
What are incoming freshmen and transfer students allowed to do with the strength and conditioning staff prior to initial enrollment at LMU?


Answer:

Medical Exam Requirement

                Prior to participation in any voluntary summer workouts, prospects shall be required to undergo a medical examination or evaluation administered or supervised by a physician (e.g., family physician, team physician).  The examination or evaluation must have been administered within six months prior to participation in any weight-training or conditioning activity.


Signed NLI & Enrolled in Summer School

 

A.         Voluntary weight lifting and conditioning activities

 

                1.      Basketball

a)     Prospects who either have signed an NLI or who have been accepted for enrollment in a regular full-time program of studies at LMU and are attending summer school (including a four-year college prospective student-athlete), may engage in voluntary summer workouts conducted by LMU's strength and conditioning coach with department-wide duties. 

 

b)     LMU may loan clean apparel (e.g., t-shirts, shorts, laundry service, socks and under garments) to prospects who are permitted to participate in voluntary summer workouts.

 

2.         All other sports

a)     Prospects (incoming high school seniors, junior college, or four-year college-transfers) may participate in voluntary weight lifting or conditioning activities (e.g., conditioning in the gym) conducted by LMU's strength and conditioning coach with department-wide duties on LMU's campus provided such activities are not prearranged.

  

b)     SAFETY EXCEPTION:  In rowing, swimming, track (field events and steeple chase only), and water polo, a prospect who is enrolled in a summer term prior to initial full-time enrollment at LMU may participate in voluntary individual workouts in the presence of the institution's coach and in LMU's regular practice facility when the prospect uses equipment related to the sport.  The coach may provide safety or skill instruction but may not conduct the individual's workout.

 

c)     LMU may loan clean apparel (e.g., t-shirts, shorts, laundry service, socks and under garments) to prospects who are permitted to participate in voluntary summer workouts.
 

B.         Use of Training Room and Athletics Academic services

 

1.     ALL SPORTS:  Prospects (incoming high school seniors, junior college, or four-year college-transfers) who are enrolled in LMU's summer term prior to the student's initial, full-time collegiate enrollment may be provided academic support services by Athletics Academic Services and also may use LMU's training-room facilities. 

 

2.     ALL SPORTS:  LMU may finance medical expenses (including rehabilitation and physical therapy expenses) for those prospects who are enrolled in summer school and sustain injuries while participating in such summer voluntary workouts (with the strength and conditioning coach) per 13.11.3.10. 


Signed NLI & Not Enrolled in Summer School
