Lions Name March Student-Athletes of the Month

Los Angeles, CA (April 8, 2003) -- Loyola Marymount University has named women's tennis senior Penka Fileva the female student-athlete of the month and sophomore Jonathan Oller of the baseball team as the male student-athlete of the month for sports during competition in the month of March.

Each month during the academic calendar, the student-athlete advisory committee (S.A.A.C.) will chose a male and female student-athlete of the month whose performance best represents the traditions of Loyola Marymount University.

Oller had a tremendous month, hitting nine home runs and five doubles in 18 games, which included a pair of grand slams. While earning a pair of WCC Player of the Week awards, Oller led LMU regulars with a .391 batting average (27-of-69) to go along with a team-high 17 runs and 26 RBI with a slugging percentage of .855 (59 total bases).

Eight of his nine home runs came against conference opponents, where he is hitting .424 with a slugging percentage of 1.242 in nine games. Oller is hitting .361 on the season, leading the team in hits (35), runs batted in (27) home runs (9) and total bases (70). Oller was also named the WCC/Rawlings Player of the Month.

Senior Penka Fileva earned Female Student-Athlete of the Month honors.

Fileva posted an 8-1 singles record in the month of March, winning six straight before recording only loss of the month to No.30 San Diego State. Of her eight wins, seven came in straight sets. She was a perfect 5-0 against conference opponents in March.

In doubles, she teamed with Patrycia Hubl to post a 7-2 record in March, once against going a perfect 5-0 against conference opponents. She earned Player of the Month honors in the WCC as both a singles and doubles player.
