Lions Set Records in Classroom

June 13, 2003

Los Angeles, CA (June 13) - The smile you can see coming from student-athlete academic coordinator Dr. Maureen Schaukowitch is with good reason. With the final grades posted for the Spring semester, Loyola Marymount University student-athletes put up record numbers, including 166 with a grade point average of 3.0 or better.

The 166 is nearly 55 percent of the students who participate in sponsored varsity sports at LMU. It replaces the record 159 student-athletes with a 3.0 or better set in the 2001-02 season. In addition, LMU had a record number of student-athletes on the Deans List with 37, over 12 percent.

In addition, the 17 programs earned an average GPA of 3.00 for this past semester. Nine individual programs had a GPA over 3.00, which included women's basketball (3.18), women's rowing (3.15), men's cross country (3.04), men's golf (3.32), women's soccer (3.19), swimming (3.03), women's volleyball (3.25) and women's water polo (3.22).

The GPA marks complete a successful season in the classroom for the Lions. Twenty academic and leadership awards were given to student-athletes by LMU, the most in program history.
