LMU Rated Second Best In WCC

June 17, 2002

Los Angeles, CA (June 17, 2002) - Loyola Marymount University was once again listed in a poll by US News & World Report, which evaluated all NCAA Division I sport programs in the nation. And once again the Lions posted favorable marks.

The weekly magazine ranked every division I program by winning percentage and championship tournament performance. The result was that the Lions finished second in the WCC and in the top third overall with a ranking of 107. The top four teams overall were from west coast as Stanford, Arizona, USC and UCLA ranked one through four. Only Pepperdine, who finished ranked 16th, was higher than LMU.

Here is how the WCC ranked:

Pepperdine - 16
LMU - 107
SCU - 178
USD - 183
USF - 226T
Gonzaga - 234
Portland - 246
St. Mary's - 248

Determining wins and losses isn't as easy as it may seem. US News & World Report ranked a school's winning percentage for all men's and women's school-to-school contests-such as football, basketball, and soccer. They also ranked the school in NCAA tournaments dominated by multi-school competitions, such as gymnastics and tennis. In figuring a school's rank, the winning percentage counted 75 percent and the tournament rank 25 percent. Records are for the year ending June 30, 2001.
