June 25, 2008
San Bruno, CA - Nine LMU spring sport student-athletes have been awarded Academic All-West Coast Conference status, the conference office announced Wednesday. The list features four from the women's rowing program, two each from baseball and women's tennis and one from men's tennis. The nine Lions honored were the fourth-most among WCC teams, trailing Gonzaga (15), San Francisco (15) and Saint Mary's (10). In total, 70 student-athletes from the eight WCC member schools received recognition.
LMU garnered four of the 14 spots on the women's rowing team, topping the two honored last year. Senior Jill Austin was honored for the second time in her career (2006), while seniors Kathryn Holzberger, Becky Nolan and Stephanie Speer each earned their first selection.
The baseball team posted two first-time selections on the squad as senior Michael Glomb and sophomore Ryan Wheeler were lauded. From women's tennis, senior Pavla Mesterova places on the team for the second straight year, joined by senior Tamara Tanner. Sophomore Nick Von Der Ahe rounds out the list from LMU, claiming a spot on the men's tennis team.
The award caps a phenomenal career for Austin, who was named First Team All-WCC in 2008 and helped LMU's lightweight 4 boat to the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association and Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Regatta championships. In March, she was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate scholarship and graduated in May with a degree in Communication Studies and a 3.80 grade-point-average.
Holzberger, Nolan, and Speer were all members of the varsity 8 for every race in 2008, with Nolan also competing with the varsity 4 boat that won the Pacific Coast Rowing Championship. All three also earned their degrees in May: Bannerman (3.22 grade-point-average) in Business, Holzberger (3.71) in Natural Science, and Nolan (3.64) in Biochemistry.
One of two LMU student-athletes working on their graduate degrees to be honored, Glomb batted .321 with seven doubles, two home runs, 24 RBI, a .389 slugging percentage and a fielding percentage of .986. In addition, he strung together the longest hitting streak of the season, batting in 21 consecutive games from April 6 to May 12. Working toward his master's degree in education, Glomb amassed a 3.83 grade-point-average.
Wheeler was a First Team All-West Coast Conference player at first base in 2007, finishing with a .345 batting average, 36 runs scored, 20 doubles, a triple, six home runs, 45 RBI and a .542 slugging percentage. In conference games alone, he batted .372 with 15 runs scored, 11 doubles, three home runs, 24 RBI, a .628 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .440. The WCC Player of the Week for the week ending March 31, Wheeler is majoring in business administration and carries a 3.45 grade-point-average.
Mesterova claimed her second consecutive All-Academic selection after earning a 3.30 grade-point-average as a business major. On the court, she finished 23-12 at No. 1 singles and 19-11 at No. 1 doubles. For her athletic efforts, she was named First Team All-WCC in both singles and doubles for the third consecutive season.
Tanner, the other half of the No. 1 doubles pair, finished 19-11 with Mesterova overall and 6-1 in West Coast Conference matches alone. Competing primarily at No. 2 singles for the Lions, Tanner posted a 7-16 mark. In the classroom, she carried a 3.90 grade-point-average while pursuing her master's degree in education.
Von der Ahe totes a 3.86 grade-point-average as a chemistry major at LMU. Earning Honorable Mention All-WCC accolades in doubles, he helped post a 14-16 overall record at the No. 3 position. He completed the season going 5-1 in dual-match play.
