Athletic Season Gets Started in Big Way

The start of the 2002-2003 collegiate athletic season is upon Loyola Marymount University, beginning with the annual Welcome Back BBQ at Gersten Pavilion today, Aug. 28. Things will really get going when the Lions host 12 home events this coming Labor Day weekend.

Everything will begin with the men's soccer team hosting the LMU Fall Classic on Friday, Aug. 30 and Sunday, Sept. 1. The Lions will play Wisconsin-Green Bay at 3 p.m., which follows the first game of the tournament between Cal and CS Northridge at 12:30 p.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, beginning at 12:30 with CS Northridge against UWGB and the Lions taking on Cal at 3 p.m.

The women's volleyball team will also host a tournament beginning on Friday, the LMU Invitational. The tournament will begin at 5 p.m. with Oklahoma taking on Duke and then the Lions facing Bradley at 7 p.m.

Saturday will be a full day of volleyball, with the Lions taking on Oklahoma at 12 noon and then Duke at 7 p.m. The other games will have Bradley taking on Duke at 10 a.m. and then Bradley taking on Oklahoma at 5 p.m.

Also on Saturday will be the season opener for the women's soccer team as they take on San Jose State at Sullivan Field at 1 p.m. They will conclude the crazy weekend against San Diego State at 3 p.m.

The 2001-02 season was a successful one for the LMU athletic department, claiming three conference titles and winning more than 52 percent of its dual competitions. That success has the Lions looking for more in this coming season.

"The last two seasons for the LMU athletic department has been very successful," said Athletic Director Bill Husak, who enters his fifth year with the Lions. "We have worked very hard this summer to prepare for this coming season and we are excited at what continues to take place here at LMU."
