Madness at Midnight to Tipoff Hoops Season
Men's and women's basketball season to start at midnight with annual event at Gersten Pavilion.

It is that time of year. The college basketball season can officialy begin at 12 midnight on Saturday, October 13. With the start of the season comes Madness at Midnight, Loyola Marymount University's annual tipoff event for the Lions' fans who will get a sneek preview of the 2001-2002 men's and women's basketball teams.
The event, which is a joint venture with the Athletic Department and ASLMU, will take place following the women's volleyball match against Santa Clara at 7 p.m. Fans will have opportunities to win prizes during a "crazy fan" contest that will begin at the volleyball game. The evening will continue all the way through midnight for the start of basketball season.
Madness at Midnight will include a dance contest between several of the athletic teams, including men's and women's soccer and men's and women's basketball. There will be a dunk contest for students and the first 600 fans to attend will get a free t-shirt (students only).
Following the count down and an introduction of both the men's and women's basketball teams, fans will get to see both teams go through drills.
As for the teams, the women's team is ranked 16th in the country in the women's basketball news service preseason poll and feature preseason All-American candidate Bryn Britton. The men's team will return seven seniors to this year's squad, including All-Conference performer Marcus Smith.
Both teams will play the first game of the season in November, with the women playing a foreign exhibition team on Nov. 1 and the men taking on Pro Hoops Australia on Nov. 2. Both games are for 7 p.m.
