Oct. 18, 2004
Los Angeles, CA (Oct. 19) - If the Lion fans were not quite awake Monday morning, they missed an impressive display of school spirit as Loyola Marymount University was the first local institution to be featured on ABC Channel 7/Good Morning America's College Week.
Nearly 500 students, including more than 80 student-athletes, the LMU Pep Band and Cheer Squad filled LMU's Regent's Terrace before dawn in support of the morning segment on ABC 7.
Students began arriving at 4:30 am, many bringing signs and most wearing LMU gear. KABC 7 weatherman Garth Kemp did a total of about 15 hits live from LMU, including four longer segments featuring LMU student-athletes that included representatives from women's volleyball, baseball, cross country, softball, men and women's crew, men and women's cross country, women's swimming and women's water polo.
Also featured during the morning was the LMU Cheer Squad and Pep Band playing the LMU fight song. Also at the event was dance group Kuumba Beats, the World Music Ensemble playing an ode to the sunrise and Communications Studies major Frava Burgess doing the weather with Kemp at the top of the hour.
ABC also did one live Good Morning America segment, and taped three others for use throughout the morning hour. The event was a success thanks to the efforts of University Relations, Student Affairs, ASLMU and Greek Council for going above and beyond to get the word out. Additional thanks to KXLU for providing raffle prizes, and thanks to Special Events, Plant Operations, Public Safety, Conferences and Events, Sportsnet and the service organizations for their invaluable help.
