Pair of Runners Named Student-Athletes of the Month
Cross country's Sara Mickelson and Lino Almeida earn S.A.A.C. monthly honor.
Nov. 1, 2005
Los Angeles, Calif. - The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) of Loyola Marymount University announced that Sara Mickelson and Lino Almeida of cross country have been selected as the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Student-Athletes of the Month. Mickelson and Almeida are honored for their athletic excellence throughout October.
Mickelson became the first LMU cross country runner to be named the West Coast Conference's Female Cross Country Runner of the Month when the conference awarded her the accolade for October. She was named first-team All-WC after finishing ninth overall (18:34) at the WCC Championship and leading LMU to its highest finish ever, placing second on the women's side.
Earlier in the month, Mickelson led the Lions at the Cal Poly Invitational, crossing the line in a career-best 18:01.8 for a top-five finish. There, the sophomore finished ahead of 2003 WCC Individual Champion Tiffanie Marley of San Diego. Mickelson helped LMU finish second of 12 teams.
Almeida finished higher than any LMU has ever finished at the WCC Championship, crossing the line in fourth place in 25:48. That time also set a new school record for the 8000m WCC Championship course and earned Almeida a first-team All-WCC selection. It was the first All-WCC first-team selection for LMU since 1984. Almeida led the Lions to a third place team finish, the best finish for the men since 1991.
Also in October, Almeida finished among the top-10 with a time of 26:57.1 at the Cal Poly Invitational, running over a minute faster than his freshman time last season on the course. Almeida helped the Lions finish fourth as a team, ahead of Pepperdine, San Diego, and Johns Hopkins.
The two student-athletes are the first cross country runners to earn the Enterprise Rent-A-Car selection.
Each month during the academic calendar, the S.A.A.C. will chose a male and female Enterprise Rent-A-Car Student-Athlete of the Month, whose performance best represents the traditions of Loyola Marymount University.
