Mickelson, Worthy Named November's Greatest

Dec. 13, 2006

LOS ANGELES - The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) of Loyola Marymount University selected basketball's Brandon Worthy and cross country's Laura Mickelson as its Athletes of the Month for November. Worthy and Mickelson both had standout performances during competition in November.

Mickelson became the first Lion in LMU history to run at the NCAA National Cross Country Championship. She finished 50th in the nation at the Terre Haute, Ind. race.

The Lions' junior was the only woman invited to the NCAA Championship from the West Coast Conference. Her 6k time of 21:38 made her the fifth place finisher from the West Region.

Earlier in November, Mickelson was named USTFCCA first-team All-Region after finishing seventh at the NCAA West Regional.

Worthy led the West Coast Conference in scoring during November, averaging 20.4 points per game. He led the Lions to a 6-2 record in the month, with wins over Oral Roberts, New Mexico State, Cal State Bakersfield, Alaska-Anchorage, Pacific, and UC Santa Barbara, with the last three wins coming on the road.

The Lions' senior was also a team leader in rebounds (second with 5.1 per game), assists (second with 27), and steals (second with 10), while leading the team from the field going 50-for-104 (48.1 percent). He also ranked in the top-10 in the WCC in three-point percentage (45.2).

November also brought several buzzer beaters for Worthy and the Lions. At the LMU Homecoming game against New Mexico State, Worthy hit a three-pointer with 0.9 left on the clock to give the Lions the win. That night, his shot was named the top "play of the day" on ESPN's SportsCenter. He finished with 28 points.

Then, facing Pacific at the Great Alaska Shootout, Worthy had a steal and lay-in to send the game to the first overtime period. In overtime, he hit a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to send it to double overtime. The Lions won in double overtime 88-85.

LMU's SAAC will select a male and female Athlete of the Month for each month during the academic year. The selection is made by SAAC members based on the nominatons' athletic performance during the month.
