LOS ANGELES, Calif.- Since the end of last season, Cheer Advisor Karina Handeland and Head Coach Niki Neville have been hard at work. In an attempt to further progress the LMU Cheer Squad, Handeland and Neville have been in contact with a local gymnastics center in order to secure a facility which possesses useful tumbling equipment. Use of the equipment, which includes spring floors, will help in advancing the tumbling talent already on the squad. As another boost to the quickly progressing program, funds were used to purchase a full floor of cheer mats, which will make practices safer and, therefore, more beneficial. Additionally, the squad will begin its season while working with Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning, Todd Sutker.

A most notable change that has been made to the program is that the cheerleaders are now recognized, by the Athletic Department and the University, as athletes. Cheerleading is now considered both a men's and women's sport, making LMU the first in its conference to do so.

The squad, which is about to begin its seventh year after a 10 year hiatus, is looking forward to the coming season and another appearance at College Nationals.
