Athletes Participate in Community Service While Bowling

Nov. 4, 2007

Los Angeles, Calif. - Costumes, student-athletes of Loyola Marymount University, bowling and canned food came together this Halloween season for a good cause. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) at LMU put on its annual fall social event, Booling, on Oct. 24, with this year having a new twist. This year's event was aimed at supporting the St. Joseph's Center in Los Angeles.

All 21 of the LMU athletic teams came dressed in costume and bowled at their annual "Booling" event at El Dorado lanes, in celebration of Halloween. Each person was required to bring a can of food to enter, which the S.A.A.C. committee donated to the St. Joseph's Center in Los Angeles.

The teams who came in costume, participated in bowling, and brought a non-perishable food item, received points for their team towards the Lion's Cup Competition. The Lion's Cup is an internal competition in which the 21 sports at LMU compete against one another in various areas - including community service, support at other campus events and other athletic events.

Prizes were given for the best bowlers and costumes. The official "Booling" Champion, was the Women's Soccer Team, who received the "golden shoe" award for dressing up as Noah's Arc. They were all dressed in animal pairs, and their coach came dressed as Noah.

Out of the many individual costumes, the best female costume went to Mona Sumibcay from the Women's Volleyball Team, who dressed as a 70's hippie. The best male costume went to David Cronin of the Men's Crew team. The best female bowler went to Darcy Pagnini who scored a 174, and Brian Locke of the Men's Golf Team was the highest male bowler with a score of 180.

This was the first year the Student Athlete Advisory Committee decided to collect non-perishable food items as a form of community service at the event. They received well over the amount they expected. This annual event was a great way for the athletes to take a break from competition and see their fellow athletes dressed in costume.
