In their first official race of the 2011-12 season, and the LMU Centennial Celebration contest for men's rowing, the Lions edged UCLA in a head-to-head race at Ballona Creek in Marina Del Rey.

Evan Yates begins his first year as a volunteer assistant coach with the Lions, working primarily with the men's novice team.
Yates was a member of the LMU men's rowing team for three years, including holding captain honors during his senior season in 2010-11. He was also actively involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, serving as the vice president from 2009-11.
Yates, a psychology with a minor in economics, is applying to post-baccalaureate pre-med programs and intends to attend medical school. He also currently works in the neurogenetics lab at USC Keck School of Medicine.
A San Francisco native, Yates was a three-sport athlete at St. Ignatius Prep High School in San Francisco. He rowed for four years under Coach Tom O'Connell, helping team go undefeated in both his junior and senior seasons. Yates' team won two national championships, three regional championships, and an international championship. He also ran one year of cross country and played one season of football.
