NEWPORT BEACH - Avenging a runner-up finish from one year ago, the LMU women's rowing team concluded competition at the Berg Cup with a resounding victory in the varsity eight, resulting in a three-race sweep at the meet hosted by Orange Coast College at Newport Harbor.
The Lions opened the day by claiming a thrilling 0.6 victory in the varsity four. LMU's winning time of 7:38.4 narrowly edged UC San Diego's runner-up finish of 7:39.0.
LMU then easily beat the Tritons in a head-to-head race in the junior varsity eight, winning the race in 6:53.7. UCSD crossed the finish in 7:25.2.
The day culminated with the varsity eight race, and LMU picking up it's third win of the day as they pulled away from Long Beach State and OCC to take the title in 6:25.0. The 49ers' runner-up time was 6:44 and Orange Coast College finished in third in 6:45.3.
"It is great to bring the Berg Cup trophy to LMU campus first time in the history of the program," said LMU Director of Rowing Vaclav Kacir. "All three boats won their races and executed their race plans. I am very proud of our girls and I believe that the LMU rowing program made another small step forward towards our goal. We still have a lot of work ahead of us. We have few weeks until our next race so we are back to work on Monday."
"I'm proud of how our team is beginning to come together," added LMU assistant coach Katelin Snyder. "The girls did a great job this weekend, but we need to keep growing in order to be successful at WCCs."
The Lions return to the water on April 14-15, taking part in the NorCal/SoCal Challenge.
