San Diego, CA - LMU completed a difficult first day against tough competition Saturday at the 35th Annual San Diego Crew Classic at Crown Point Shores in San Diego. The Lions will return to the water on Sunday.
LMU sent five boats to compete against some of the top squads on the national collegiate scene. The Lions' best finish in the initial heats came in the women's varsity 8 when LMU placed third out of six boats to advance to the Petite Final on Sunday. LMU completed the course in 6:52.37, one second ahead of Santa Clara and eight seconds behind second-place SUNY Buffalo. Sacramento State won the heat in 6:43.00.
The day opened up with the men's varsity 8 rowing in the first event of the morning. The Lions performed well in their first competition since March 8 but could not keep up with the rest of the sheet, placing sixth in 6:20.25. That would earn them a place in the 3rd Final later Saturday, where the finished fourth in 6:46.11.
The women's lightweight 8 was the third LMU boat to launch, placing fourth in 7:21.42 in a field that included national powers Stanford, Wisconsin, and Cal. They were followed by the men's novice 8, which rowed home in 6:54.27 to place sixth in its heat. The final LMU heat of the day belonged to the women's JV8, who finished seventh in 7:19.93.
The action continues Sunday with the Petite Finals in the women's varsity, JV, and lightweight 8.
