Lion Rowing Clinches Three Medals at WIRAs

GOLD RIVER, Calif. - LMU's men's pair, men's varsity four and women's second varsity eight all medaled in their respective Grand Final races Sunday at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Lake Natoma. The duo of Jovan Flores and Mark Laurence were narrowly edged at the finish line by Seattle, as the Redhawks clinched gold in 7:10.6 while the Lions took silver in 7:10.9. The men's varsity four was also highly contested among the top finishers as just 3.5 seconds separated first through third places. Western Washington took gold in 6:49.4, Lewis & Clark took silver in 6:52.1 and LMU earned the bronze medal in 6:52.9. Cal (6:59.8), UCLA (7:07.9) and Long Beach State (7:21.1) rounded out the competitors. The Lion men also competed in the novice four Grand Final, taking fourth place in 6:57.3. On the women's side, LMU's second varsity eight had the best finish of the day, earning the bronze medal with a time of 7:09.1. Gonzaga claimed gold in the race, finishing in 6:47.8 while Sacramento State earned silver in 6:59.4. The women's varsity four finished fifth with a time of 8:30.8 and the varsity eight took sixth with a time of 6:56.8. The LMU women return to competition, and Lake Natoma, on May 11-12, competing in the 2012 West Coast Conference Championships. The Lions were the preseason selection to finish No. 4 in the WCC. The remainder of the WCC field includes Creighton, Gonzaga, Portland, Saint Mary's, San Diego and Santa Clara.
