NEWPORT, Calif. The LMU men's and women's rowing teams competed in a pair of events Sunday at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival, and saw marked improvement across the board in what served as their final competition until February.

The Lions entered one boat in the men's open 4+, completing the 4,500-meter course in 18:52, which was the 12th best time in the field of 20. Rowing for LMU was Glen Akiona, Brett Buettner, Roberth Thames, Brendan Henderson and coxswain Jennifer Sonnier.

LMU raced both an "A" and "B" boat in the women's open 4 with the "A" boat finishing with a time of 19:57. That mark was second only to Oklahoma's "A" boat which finished in 19:22. LMU's lineup consisted of Jessica Kegel, Margaret Boze, Shannon Craig, Kat Regen and coxswain Kellyn Freire.

The Lions' "B" boat of Chris Erhart, Sydney Sutton-Liswith, P.K. Carey-Jones, Danielle Ciraulo and coxswain Jen Koester placed 11th in the field of 14, finishing in 23:18.

"We have a lot of work to do between now and the spring," said LMU assistant coach Katelin Snyder, "but I am also excited to see what these girls can accomplish."

Head coach Vaclav Kacir echoed Snyder's comments. "Our results at NARF are suggesting that we are taking steps in the right direction and I am very pleased with the performance of the Lions at this regatta."

The Lions return to action on Feb. 25 in a head-to-head competition with UC Santa Barbara. The full 2012 spring schedule can be found here .
