NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The LMU men's and women's rowing teams closed out the fall portion of the 2012-13 schedule at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival on Sunday at the Newport Aquatic Center.
The women raced two boats in the WO8+ and one in the WO4+, turning in solid results in both 4,500 meter events. The Lions 'A' boat in the open eight finished in 16:01 while the 'B' boat crossed the finish line in 17:16.
In a field of 18 rigs, the women's open four placed fourth in a time of 16:40, trailing just a trio of UCLA boats. Finishing just behind LMU was the San Diego 'A' boat, marking the first time the Lions have had a boat beat the Toreros since LMU won the WCC title in 2006.
"Finishing ahead of USD in the four is an excellent indicator that we are moving in the right direction," said LMU Director of Rowing Vaclav Kacir. "In addition, we had two freshmen in the four and four freshmen in the varsity eight, so it is exciting to see how much depth in our freshman class."
The Lion men, meanwhile, stroked a 15:11 in the open eight and 19:10 in the freshman novice eight.
LMU's spring season gets underway on March 2 when both the men's and women's squads go head-to-head against UCLA in Marina Del Rey.
