Lions Picked Third in Preseason WCC Rowing Poll

LOS ANGELES - LMU rowing has been slated to finish third in the West Coast Conference, according to the 2010 preseason coaches poll released Friday. In addition, junior Michelle Herrerias was the only Lion among the eight rowers selected to the preseason all-conference team.

Gonzaga University edged the University of San Diego as the preseason favorites. The Bulldogs collected three first place votes to tally 15 overall points, edging the Toreros, who picked up two first place votes and earned 14 points. LMU was picked third with nine points, followed by Saint Mary's College with eight points and Santa Clara University with four points.

Gonzaga, which has won 12 of the 13 WCC Championships, also landed three rowers on the preseason all-conference team in seniors Liz Moore and Alissa Stempson, and junior Samantha Cekovic. San Diego earned two rowers on the preseason all-conference team in seniors Katharine Petrich and Christine Holloway, while Loyola Marymount (Michelle Herrerias), Saint Mary's (Jordan Bonadio), and Santa Clara (Gabby Alexander) each landed one rower on the preseason all-conference squad.

Gonzaga captured last year's WCC Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif., winning the II Eight and the I Eight races. The Zags tallied 29 points to edge San Diego, which finished second with 25 points. The Toreros started the day by winning the I Four heat. LMU finished third with 14 points, followed by Saint Mary's with 13 points and Santa Clara with eight points.
