Los Angeles, CA (May 15) - Riding the momentum of an impressive win in the Grand Final at the WIRA Championship two weeks ago, the Loyola Marymount University women's rowing Varsity 8 team will compete in the Pac-10 Rowing Championships on Sunday, May 18 at the CSUS Aquatic Center in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

The men's crew team Varsity 8 and the women's second Varsity 8 will also compete in the annual championship that features the top 21 entrants for each event in the West Region. The women's Varsity 8 drew the No. 8 seed and will need to finish in the top three of their heat to advance to the Grand Final.

LMU will compete in Heat 1 with top-ranked Washington, USC, Washington State, Sacramento State, Santa Clara and Oregon. The Varsity 8 features seven teams ranked in the top-20 nationally. A top-three finish in the heat and a trip to the Grand Final puts teams into the top-20 nationally and a strong shot at the NCAA Championship on May 30. Heat 1 of the women's varsity 8 is at 10:00 a.m.

The women's second varsity 8 is the No. 12 seed and will row in Heat 1 at 9:20 a.m. The men's varsity 8 will compete as the No. 14 seed in Heat 2 at 10:30 a.m. The championship races begin at 12:10 p.m.

Each of the 13 institutions in the women's varsity 8 competition on Sunday were seeded and placed into the qualifying heats accordingly. The event will mark the end of the women's rowing season. Since the advent of the NCAA Championships in 1997, holding the Pac-10s on the final weekend allows the selection committee to compare virtually all of the west coast crews under comparable race conditions. A total of 16 schools will advance to this year's NCAA Division I Championship, with the top 12 teams (varsity 8, second varsity 8 and varsity 4) in the country and four at-large varsity 8 boats advancing to the regatta.
