VARESE, Italy - Sophomore LMU rower Silvia Torsellini helped lead the Italian W4x to a ninth-place finish at the 2012 European Championships in Varese, Italy.
Torsellini, along with teammates Gaia Marzari, Laura Basadonna, Veronica Paccagnella, opened competition with a 6:52.51 finish in the second of two preliminary heats. In the repechage race, Italy trimmed nearly three seconds off its time, completing the 2000m course in 6:49.82.
Advancing to the "B" final, they closed out competition with a third place, 6:55.97 finish.
"It was great for Silvia to be exposed to the racing at the senior international level," said LMU Director of Rowing Vaclav Kacir. "Racing against Olympians will help her to mature as an athlete."
Torsellini was the second Lion to compete in international competition in recent months. In August, freshman Mackenzi Sherman earned a sixth-place finish in the junior women's double sculls at the 2012 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
LMU begins its fall competition on Oct. 17 in a dual meet against UCLA at Ballona Creek in Marina del Rey.
