Joerger Wins 3000m, Lions Set PRs at Pomona-Pitzer Race

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Lions continued their success in the opening weeks of the 2013 Track season with a great showing at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet on Saturday. Junior Kevin Joerger won the men's 3000m race joining several Lions in setting new personal records in the first full team run of the year.
Joerger finished the 3000-meter run in 8:27.51, setting a new personal record in the process. Junior Drew Dalton finished third overall, with a time of 8:35.55. Douglas Petree and Michael Vorgitch, came in at 8:39.08 and 8:41.07, for fourth and fifth, respectively. Freshman Michael Duncan ran the 3k in 8:50.86, which placed him 10th. Senior Michael Carlone placed 12th in 8:52.41, establishing a new personal-best rime. Fellow senior Greg Innes was a second behind at 8:53.28, also a new PR, for 14th overall.
Junior Mike Evans and freshman Ryan Vargas placed 22nd and 23rd. Evans finished in 8:59.77, while Vargas crossed at 9:00.39. Junior Dan Smith set a PR with a time of 9:09.79, for 31st. Freshman Sam Worley finished in 9:27.38, 36th overall. Sophomore Andres Lopez was 40th in the race, with a time of 9:30.44. Junior RJ Larrieu finished close behind in 9:31.64, a PR, for 42nd. Sophomore Derek Weber completed the Lions' men's string of personal records with a time of 9:37.28, 49th overall.
For the LMU women, a block of five Lions finished between third and seventh. Senior Cassandra Salazar lead the pack with a time of 10:19.68. Callie Mulgannon and Sarah Vitug set PRs finishing in 10:20.10 and 10:21.75. Senior Caroline Draper had a time of 10:25.10. Freshman Kelli Sugimoto rounded out the Lions' front five in 10:25.18.
Junior Brittnie Munoz crossed at 10:41.71, 14th overall. Freshman Taylor Paschen finished a second later at 10:42.54, for 15th, in her first competitive race as a Lion. Freshman Melanie Joerger was 16th overall at 10:46.69.
Freshman Kelly Parsons ran a time of 11:26.58 for 29th. Alexandra Young finished 36th overall in 11:53.76.
The Lions are back on the track at the West Coast Quadrangular and West Coast Relays next weekend in Orinda, Calif. The Quadrangular is Saturday, Feb. 23, and the Relays are the following day.
