This weekend the LMU track team had their official season opener after their original opening invitational was rained out two weeks ago. The Lions ran at the Pomona Pitzer Invitational yesterday and showed that they are not slowing down after such a successful fall Cross Country season setting personal records and placing in the top of their races.
On the women's side, freshman Sheree Shea won the 3000meter race in 10:02.71. Close behind Shea, sophomore Cassandra Salazar improved her time from last season running a 10:04.35. Shea and Salazar came in first an second overall against teams from Pomona-Pitzer, USD, Whittier, Champan and Santa Barbara and Cal State Bakersfield. Brieanna Delaney came in next for the Lions coming in 5th overall in 10:35.19 also set a personal record from last season. After already competing in the 800meter race where she ran 2:25.79, Chaidez turned in a 10:38.19 in the 3000meter race, 6th overall which was a personal record. Following in suit, freshman Caroline Draper finished in 10:46.26, senior Brooke Lademan 10:47 and freshman Jessica Mumaugh 10:53 all came in the top ten of the race. Also for the Lions Megan Fairley came in 14th overall in 10:53, Marissa Diehl 11:17 and Shea Franklin 11:39. The Lions had seven in the top ten of the race, three personal records and an overall solid start to the spring track season.
On the men's side the Lions competed in the 1 mile race and the 3000meter race. In the mile, freshman Greg Innes led the Lions coming in 3rd overall in 4:24. Following Innes, sophomore Erich Yanoschik and freshman Tyre Johnson came in 4:29 and 4:36 respectively. In the 3000meter race the Lions had five in the top ten of the entire race. Leading the Lions, freshman Sterling Lockert came in second overall in 8:33.93. Close behind Lockert, junior Connor Pastoor set a personal record for the 3k finishing in 8:38.21 with sophomore Thomas Finnigan close on his heels in 8:38.86. Senior Brian McDonald also turned in a solid performance for the Lions running an 8:44.91 and finishing in the top ten overall. Also for the Lions, freshman Tyre Johnson 8:57.50, sophomore Michael Herrera 9:28.05 and freshman Michael Carlone 9:40.02 all turned in good performances.
In the field events, senior Gabi Hybki won the women's high jump with 4-11 jump. In the women's triple jump, Chelsea Whirsham came in second overall and Tiffany Yee
came in 6th overall in the Long Jump. On the men's side, senior Keyon Mitchell
came in second in the Long Jump.
Next up, the Lions will travel to Malibu for the West Coast Track Challenge on Saturday February 27th.
