Lions Run at Early Season West Coast Quadrangular

Orinda, Calif. – In their final tune-up before their season-opener at the Occidental Invitational next Saturday, the Lions competed against West Coast Conference foes Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara and San Francisco at the West Coast Quad Meet on Sunday.

The women kicked off the meet in the Invitational where sophomore Hannah Wohlenberg finished third running just a second off a personal best crossing the line in 4:42.3. Juniors Ann Kelly (4:46.0) and Giselle Masedo were the second and third Lions into the finish. Senior Maddi Vorgitch, a 10K specialist, was also a second from a personal best running 4:51.9. Freshman Rosie Cruz (4:56.2) and junior Emily Hubert (4:56.5) rounded out the six Lions that competed in the Invitational.

In the Women’s Open, freshman Holly LaPlante made a late charge but came up just a touch short finishing second in the race. LaPlante ran 5:05.4. Junior Elena Garcia was on her heels in third at 5:05.6. Freshmen Dani Rowlinson and Gaby Guerrero ran 5:10.4 and 5:15.1 respectively.

In the Men’s Invitational, senior Jack Polerecky came away with the win running a 4-second personal best time of 3:56.9. Junior Brian Joerger also had a career best running 3:58.5 and improving on his best mark by three seconds. The threesome of junior Branden Estrada (3:59.4), junior Koby Pederson and freshman Joseph Garcia (3:59.9) all broke the 4:00 barrier for the Lions.



Sophomore Matt Stein outlasted his nearest opponent to win the Men’s Open. Stein ran 4:14.3. Sophomore Marcus Avila and Nick Wells also had solid performances.

Next up for the Lions is the Oxy Invitational on Saturday, March 10 where the Lions will compete in their primary event.
