Lions Debut With Strong 1,500m Times
Both men's and women's track squads competed in the 1,500m at the Cal State LA Invitational.
LOS ANGELES - Danielle Shanahan and Kayla de Bondt went one-two for the women and Brandon Vientos placed sixth overall for the men as both LMU men's and women's track teams competed in the 1,500m run at the Cal State L.A. Invitational Saturday.
Racing her first 1,500m of the young season, Shanahan's first-place time was 4:26.71, while de Bondt followed in 4:27.55. The Lion women had four runners in the top 10 as Kelli Capel placed fourth in 4:38.33 and Samantha Garcia was sixth in 4:42.31.
Sophomore Maddi Vorgitch ran a personal best 4:52.66 in the 1,500m, lowering her time more than four seconds from last season, while freshman Emily Hubert debuted with a 4:51.74 in her first collegiate 1,500m.
For the men, Vientos' sixth-place finish came in a time of 4:01.09. Seniors Michael Duncan and Lance Capel placed 10th and 11th, respectively. Duncan finished in 4:02.27, just .16 seconds off his PR, while Capel trimmed nearly two seconds off his PR in the 1,500m, finishing in 4:03.09.
Junior Grant Lapovich also set a big PR in the race, finishing in 4:14.05, which smashed his previous best time of 4:20.59. Freshman Koby Pederson made his 1,500m debut with a time of 4:05.86, good for 22nd place among the 80 runners.
The Lions are back in action Friday at the Oxy Distance Carnival in Eagle Rock, Calif.
