NAMPA, Idaho - LMU redshirt senior Tara Erdmann earned her seventh All-American honor Saturday evening with a near victory at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Erdmann finished the women's 3000 meter race in 9:16.87, only one second behind overall winner Emily Infield of Georgetown, to take fifth place. Erdmann nearly captured the national title, falling behind with less than three minutes left in the race after leading it for several minutes.

The race started with the pack of 17 competitors running in a tight bunch. As the pack started to spread and space was created, Erdmann cruised into second place. At the 600m mark, she was leading the pack. Tara hit the 600m mark at 1:13 into the race and battled with Wichita State's Aliphine Tuliamuk for the lead, with Erdmann in front for nearly four minutes. At 2000 meters, Erdmann dropped back to second place and held on as the front of the field battled for position. Tara gave a final effort in the last 200 meters and ran her hardest through the finish line crossing just a second behind Infield. Erdmann's outstanding effort placed her in the top five, the only competitor from a non-BCS conference school.

Tara's path to Nampa was not easy. Erdmann had to battle to get into the National Championships. She started her 2012 indoor track season with a 9:12.15 at the Husky Classic. Needing a time less than 9:10 to qualify for today's race Tara ran a 9:08.85, her personal record, at the UW Final Qualifier last week at the University of Washington. Tara's career has seen her elevate her performance when the situation has mattered most.

Erdmann collected her seventh All-American honor with her outstanding performance Saturday. It was her fifth honor in track, with two in cross country. She closes out another national championship with another inspired performance. With national honors in cross country, the indoor track, the outdoor track and for her efforts in the classroom, she is the epitome of the title "student athlete."
