Vientos Smashes PR in 5K Win

LOS ANGELES - Senior Brandon Vientos crushed his personal record in the 5,000m on his way winning the event Friday night as the LMU men's and women's track teams competed at the Oxy Distance Carnival, hosted by Occidental University.

Vientos won his section, and eventually was crowned the champion of the entire 250+ member field on the 5k, setting a PR time of 14:11.77. His previous best time was 14:36.96.

Fellow senior Lance Capel also set a PR in the 5k, finishing in 14:53.25, cutting more than four seconds off his previous best time.

The Lion men also competed in the 1,500m and the 3,000m steeplechase. Freshman Branden Estrada won his second of the 1,500m in a PR time of 4:08.81. Fellow freshman Brian Joerger also set a PR in the race, finishing in 4:11.62. In his 3k steeplechase debut, freshman Koby Pederson finishing in 9:35.31.

 

 

For the women, the biggest PR mark was sophomore Maddi Vorgitch, who trimmed nearly 14 seconds off of her 5k time with a 17:22.40, 14th-place finish. Senior Kelli Capel took sixth place overall in the 5k with a time of 16:52.24. Fellow senior Samantha Garcia ran a PR time of 17:32.14 and freshman Elena Garcia debuted in the 5k with a time of 18:28.15.

Freshman Danielle Nunez took eighth in the 3,000m steeple with a time of 12:26.52. It was her first attempt at the event. Junior Kayla de Bondt place fifth in the 1,500m in a time of 4:28.36 while Chloe Curtis took ninth in the 800m in a time of 2:17.88.

A small group of Lions will return to action on Saturday, March 19 at the UCI Spring Break Invitational. The Full squad will continue action on March 25-26 at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational.
