LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
The Lions sent two females to the prestigious 2011 Stanford Track and Field Invitational to compete yesterday night, coming away with two of the top performances on the day. Tara Erdmann won the 10000m race in a huge personal best and school record of 33:10 while sophomore teammate Sheree Shea also had a huge personal best, also winning her race in the third heat of the 5k in 16:27.
LMU's Tara Erdmann pulled in to the lead with just one lap to go, and even when Nero of Wichita State pulled ahead on the back stretch, Erdmann rounded the last 200m gliding into the lead. Erdmann didn't look back pressing on a grueling sprint in what looked like an effortless stride to win the Stanford Invitational 10k in 33:10. Last season, Erdmann earned All-American honors for a 6th place finish at the NCAA Track & Field National Championships for the 10,000m and then went on to earn another All-American status for a top 25 finish at the Cross Country National Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana. Already this track season, Erdmann has continued to accumulate accolades earning yet another All-American status for the 3k in Indoor Track just a couple weeks ago.
In her first outdoor track race this season, Erdmann took off to an incredible start and didn't hold back. At the competitive Stanford Invitational, Erdmann came off the line in the middle of a pack of over thirty-five top female runners from across the nation. After twenty five laps of not only staying with the top pack of five runners, while also staying on a blistering pace for a long distance race, Erdmann won the race in 33:10.15. Erdmann pulled into the lead on the final lap beating out a top pack of seven--all garnering for the top spot of the day, sprinting to the finish line to turn in a personal best and school record in 33:10. Not only is this time a school record and personal best, but it will also be one of the top times in the nation, if not the fastest clocked so far this season. Erdmann was up against some of the best in the country beating out runners from Iowa, Duke, Boston, USC and Tennessee to win her race today and truly represented LMU with flying colors.
Sophomore Sheree Shea also recorded a stellar performance in the 5k race. Shea shattered her previous 5k best of 16:45 in winning her heat of the 5k in 16:27. In one of the most competitive events of the meet, Shea hung with the top pack of runners moving up throughout the race before moving into the lead for the majority of the race. Rounding the last lap, Shea battled with a competitive pack of seven exchanging the lead a couple times before rounding the final 200m and pulling into the lead with one last sprint down the home stretch to win the race in 16:27. Not only did Shea win her heat, but she also continued to battle with the top runners throughout the final lap to pull through for a victory in the last 200meters of the race. Shea finished ahead of Barinova of Nebraska, Falch of Augustana, Eilers of Iowa and Nelson of Wyoming to hear the win.
