LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Yesterday two Lions, Junior Tara Erdmann and freshman Sterling Lockert competed in the elite Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. Each year the Stanford Invitational draws the top athletes from around the country who have qualified to compete amongst the top in the country. In the 10,000meter race yesterday night, Erdmann smashed her own personal record and set a new school record, putting her with one of the fastest times in the country for the distance.
Freshman Sterling Lockert ran earlier that morning, clocking a 14:40 for the 5k distance. Lockert had set the school record in the 5000m a few weeks ago and this 14:40 is still third all-time at LMU. Coach Scott Guerrero said, "I had hoped that Sterling would get in a better heat, but he's only a freshman so mostly I wanted him to get some exposure to that level of competition. No question that he will run a lot faster before the season is done."
Erdmann competed in the 10,000 meter run late last night and set a personal and school record for the distance in 33:21. Erdmann smashed her previous personal record of 34:29 by over a minute and put her under the USATF "A" standard. Junior Track star Tara Erdmann said, "Our original plan was to aim fro 34:00 since my previous time as 34:29. With such long race, I was able to see how I was feeling and go from there. After a certain point, everything just started clicking and I didn't even know how fast I was going, but I just went with it. It felt really good to run so well and get under the qualifying time."
In preparation for a long season, Erdmann has only raced four times so far this season, two of which were indoors, each time however Erdmann has set a personal record and a school record. Her success has been unmatched and gives her some of the top times in the country. In the 3000meter distance her 9:19.69 ranks #20, while her personal record in the 1500m at UC Irvine last weekend stood at #2 in the NCAA before this weekend.
Head Coach Scott Guererro said, "Tara is just lighting up the track. She has touched the track four times so far this season and every single time she has run a personal best and school record. Her 10k at Stanford was amazing, no doubt Tara will have one of the top 10k times in the NCAA. Four track meets, four personal bests, four school records and four of the top performances in the country. Pretty impressive."
The rest of the LMU Track team will compete tonight and Sunday at UCLA in the Cal-Nevada Championships. Tonight the men's 5k runs at 7:00pm and the women will go off at 7:30pm.
