Big PRs at SDSU Aztec Invite
Freshmen and seniors led the way in San Diego Saturday.
SAN DIEGO - A handful of Lions set big personal record marks as both LMU men’s and women’s track teams competed at the San Diego State Aztec Track & Field Invitational Saturday.
Leading the way for the women were a pair of seniors and three freshmen who had big days. Senior Evelyn Gonzalez raced to a 4:49.22 personal record in the 1,500m. Classmate Samantha Garcia trimmed 10 seconds off her record time in the 3,000m, finishing in 10:05.92.
Freshman Ann Kelly had the biggest drop of the meet, racing to a 4:55.79 in the 1,500m. That mark was down from her collegiate debut time of 5:32.16 set on March 5. Classmate Emily Hubert set a PR in the 3,000m, finishing in 10:27.66 while Danielle Nunez lowered her 3,000m steeplechase mark to 12:09.98 in just her second collegiate attempts.
In the men’s 3,000m, freshman Branden Estrada finished in 8:53.74 in his collegiate debut. Senior Ryan Vargas was just .12 seconds off his all-time best with an 8:56.12 finish.
Senior Michael Duncan placed second in the 3,000m steeple in season best time of 9:24.92. And in the men’s 5,000m run, senior Lance Capel was third in 14:58.11, sophomore Jack Polerecky was seventh in 15:13.14 and junior Grant Lapovich was ninth in a personal record time of 15:16.59.
Next weekend, the Lions will split up to compete at the Stanford Invitational and the UCLA Legends Invitational on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2.
