The Lions ran a split squad on Friday night with the majority racing at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival at Drake Stadium on the campus of UCLA. For the second week in a row, the Lion Men's and Women's track teams posted double-digit personal bests.
Senior Danielle Shanahan travelled north to the 2017 Stanford Invitational where she ran in the 'Invitational' section of the 5000m against some of the top collegiate runners in the nation. Danielle ran 15:50.77 for 6th place in the race, a mark which currently ranks as the 8th fastest in the NCAA. The time is an overall career best eclipsing her previous mark of 15:52.37 indoors and 15:58.79 outdoors.
At the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival on the UCLA campus, freshman Hannah Wohlenberg (17:07.78), junior Maddi Vorgtich (17:09.08), and sophomore Kyla Danforth (17:19.97) all had personal bests in the fastest section of the 5000m. Wohlenberg’s time was 26 seconds faster than she had run three weeks earlier. She was seventh in the section. Vorgitch was behind Wohlenberg in eighth and improved on her previous best from 2016 by less than a second. Danforth had over an 18 second improvement on her personal best.
In the men's 5K, sophomore Koby Pederson was second in his section and ran a personal best of 14:53.47, cracking the 15-minute barrier for the first time. Pederson's previous best was 15:01.28. Sophomore Brian Joerger also broke the 15-minute barrier for the first time running a career best 14:59.47 and adding himself to the LMU top-20 list for the distance. This is a milestone for the program as the LMU 5K top-20 now consists of performances that are sub-15 minutes. Sophomore Alex Sasser ran a personal best of 15:39.24, which was a little over a second improvement. In the men's 1500 meters, five men earned personal bests. Leading the way, Branden Estrada came from behind to finish fourth in a time of 3:53.20 and crushing his best time by 2.65 seconds. This break-out performance puts him seventh all-time in LMU history. Also, his time makes him the third fastest Lion on the sophomore all-time list.
Junior Nick Wells (4:03.10) and the freshman trio of Matt Stein (4:02.37), Ben Davis (4:05.86) and Marcus Avila (4:06.52) also recorded personal bests. For Stein, this is the third time in four opportunities that he has run a career best. Both Stein and Davis improved by two seconds and Avila over three seconds.
The Lion's will take a well-deserved break next weekend before they compete at the Mt SAC Relays and Beach Invitational on the weekend of April 13th through 15th.
