San Francisco, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount men's and women's track teams completed their first officially sanctioned season with a successful showing at the Johnny Mathis Invitational Saturday. The teams combined to break two school-records, win two heats, and set many personal bests.

The Lion women kicked the meet off in the 1500m with a school-record breaking performance. Both Laura Mickelson and Sara Mickelson broke the previous school time of 4:43.34 set by Claudia Bishop at the UC Irvine Collegiate Classic meet earlier this year. Their times of 4:39.1 and 4:41.76 were good enough for first and second among collegiate runners and second and fourth place overall.

Next up for the Lions was the men's 1500m, where spectators were treated to an exciting finish. After leaving the rest of the pack behind, Reynaldo Barrera and Mo Elmi battled back and forth the last 200m with Reynaldo edging Mo at the tape to win the heat. Barrera and Elmi's times of 4:06.8 and 4:07.45 were good enough for fifth and sixth among collegiate runners and ninth and tenth overall.

The men's 400m was next on the track for the Lions. Adam Stebbins ran 51.93 to finish third in his heat and narrowly missed his own school-record by .57 seconds.

The next event for the women was the 800m where junior Heather Rosas took charge of the race from the beginning, leading the entire way to finish in a time of 2:30.73, a personal-record by seven seconds.

The final individual event on the track for the Lions was the men's and women's 5000m. Abby Fall led the way for the women, finishing third among college runners and sixth overall in a time of 18:05.26, passing her previous best time by 22 seconds.

In the men's 5000m, freshman Trevor Wiseman was the top Lion finisher, placing 14th overall. His time of 15:29.09 eclipsed his previous best time by more than six seconds.

The last event on the track was the men's and women's 4x400m relay. The women's team, consisting of Bishop, Kristen Gonzalez, Caitlin Jennings and Melani Hom, finished third in the heat in a time of 4:19.34, narrowly missing the school-record time of 4:17.01. The men's team consisting of Stebbins, Ben Zenk, Kacy Sommers and Barrera ran a thrilling race with Barrera re-taking the lead on the back stretch and holding on for the victory in a school-record time of 3:45.77.

For the remainder of the collegiate track season, the Lions will be taking a limited squad to a few extra meets. Next up is the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego on April 22nd.
