Lions Run Solid at Triton Invitational

April 15, 2018

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Lions track & field teams ran a limited squad at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Saturday, April 14. For LMU, the day started with the women’s 1500 meters where junior Kyla Danforth finished 12th with a time of 4:41.98. Her time was the best she has run under the Lion jersey by over three seconds, but was just shy of a career best. In the men’s 1500 meters, senior Harry Loasby ran 3:59.94 and finished 21st in a solid field. For Loasby, a native of Hong Kong, his time makes him the Hong Kong national leader for the 1500 meters. Senior Chris Fredlund was a little over a second behind Loasby, running 4:02.08 and finishing 26th. Freshman Kyle Friedler set a career best by over six seconds running 4:08.53.

Five women ran the 3000 meters, led by junior Emily Hubert who crossed the line in fifth place with a time of 10:33.92. Behind Hubert, freshman Gaby Guerrero, junior Elena Garcia and freshman Danielle Rowlinson finished 8th, 9th and 10th respectively. Guerrero finished in a time of 10:50.57 while Garcia and Rowlinson ran season bests of 10:53.12 and 10:54.64. Rowlinson was the winner of the second heat in the 3000 meters. In the final race of the day, junior Ben Davis ran a solid 5000-meter race finishing in a time of 15:19.68 and 19th place.

The Lions will next take to the track Thursday, April 19, and Friday, April 20, at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays at Murdock Stadium on the campus of El Camino College in Torrance, Calif. Senior Maddi Vorgitch will take her first crack at the 10,000 meters this season on Thursday night. Last year she ran 35:23 but has run her three 5000-meter races this year faster than she did last year, so she is looking for an improvement and possibly a NCAA-Regional qualifier.

Freshman Rosie Cruz and junior Giselle Masedo will also compete in the women's 10,000 meters. Davis and freshman Joseph Garcia will toe the line for the first time in a 10,000 meter race for the Lion men. On Friday, the school record holder in the 10,000 meters, senior Jack Polerecky, will try to improve on his early season career best of 14:15.90 in the 5000 meters. Also competing in the 5000 meters for the Lions will be juniors Brian Joerger and Koby Pederson.
