April 17, 2006
Walnut, Calif. - The Loyola Marymount women's track team took two athletes to compete against strong competition at the Mt. SAC Relays. Both Laura Mickelson and Sara Mickelson competed in the university/open heat of 5000m Thursday afternoon in extreme temperatures, which reached 87 degrees.
With the pack settling on an easy pace, Mickelson and Mickelson took control of the race and worked together in order to ensure an honest pace. After alternating pace-setting duties for the first eight laps of the race, Laura Mickelson began to pull away finishing in a stellar time of 17:00:25 to take the heat victory by over 30 seconds. Her time was just shy of the NCAA regional qualifier and the 16:57.69 school-record she set two weeks earlier at the Stanford Invitational. Sara Mickelson finished strong, running 17:40.62 to take fifth place in the heat.
Next up for the Lion track team is the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego on April 22nd.
