Freshmen Lead Lions at Triton Invite

Freshman Branden Estrada has lowered in 1,500m PR in every race this year.

Triton Invitational Results

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Four Lions set personal records and two more had season best times as the LMU men’s and women’s track teams competed at the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego, Saturday.

The freshman duo of Ann Kelly and Danielle Nunez had the biggest drops, each racing a PR in the 1,500m. Kelly cut five seconds off of her previous best time, finishing in 4:44.05. Nunez trimmed nearly four seconds off her previous best time, breaking the five minute barrier for the first time at 4:56.87.

Kelly also ran a PR in the 800m, finishing in 2:19.41. Samantha Garcia rounded out the top performances on the women’s side, racing a time of 4:40.62 in the 1,500m, good for a season best and just .15 seconds off her all-time best.

For the Lion men, freshman Branden Estrada dropped his PR in the 1,500m for the fourth consecutive race, finishing in 3:55.85. Senior Ryan Vargas also set a PR in the 1,500m, finishing in 4:01.63.



Sophomore Christopher Fredlund ran a season best 4:01.58, while classmate Mat Holton competed in the 1,500m for the first time this season, finishing in 4:14.58. Joey Rodgers rounded things out with his first collegiate 1,500m, finishing in 4:19.14.

Next up for the Lions is the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine on April 29-30. A handful of Lions will also seek entry into Stanford’s prestigious Payton Jordan Invitational on May 1.
