Two Lions Compete at UC Irvine/Steve Scott Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. - Senior Laura Mickelson and sophomore Keyon Mitchell were the lone two participants at the UC Irvine/Steve Scott Invitational over the weekend. Mickelson competed in the 5000 meter run on Saturday, while Mitchell jumped in the long jump and triple jump.

Mickelson, attempting to run a 16:52 to meet the NCAA qualifying standard for the distance, finished fourth overall in the 5000, turning in a time of 17:17.31. Jenna Jensen from BYU won the race in 16:46.96.

Mitchell first competed in the long jump, posting a mark of 6.94 meters to claim 13th in the event. Cal State Northridge's Reindell Cole easily outdistanced the competition, claiming first with a leap of 8.17 meters. In his second event of the Invite, the triple jump, Mitchell finished 10th overall with a jump of 13.83 meters. Mitchell's jump was just .05 meters short of the ninth-place finisher, Ian Jennings. Oklahoma's Tydree Lewis took the top spot in the event, posting a mark of 16.06 meters.

The next scheduled meet for LMU is the Occidental Invitational on Saturday. The meet provides one of the last chances for collegiate athletes to meet NCAA qualifying standards.
