LOS ANGELES. - While the LMU men's and women's track seniors took part in the LMU undergraduate commencement ceremonies, a group of Lion underclassmen competed at the Occidental Invitational, many of them racing for the final time this spring.

Four women and nine men competed in either the 1,500m or 5,000m with five Lion men achieving personal best times.

Sophomore Nicolas Wells was one of three Lions to race the 1,500m, and the lone team member to set a new low in the event, racing to a time of 4:03.48. In the men's 5k, sophomore Jack Polerecky (14:29.95), freshman Branden Estrada (15:30.05), junior Grant Lapovich (14:56.69) and freshman Joey Rodgers (15:49.34) set new low marks while freshman Jordan McLennan finished in 14:58.62 in his first collegiate attempt.

In competition through May 8 the Lions have a combined eight marks that rank in the NCAA West Region's top 95. Danielle Shanahan leads the likely postseason-qualifying contingent, currently ranked 12th in the 5k (15:59.79). The junior is also ranked 62nd int he 1,500m (4:22.50).

Kayla de Bondt is 51st in the 1,500m (4:21.88) and Kelli Capel is 51st in the 5k (16:24.93). For the men, Brandon Vientos is 58th in the 10k (29:55.37) and 78th in the 5k (14:11.77), while Michale Duncan is 83rd in the 3,000m steeplechase (9:14.94) and Lance Capel is 94th in the 10k (30:37.58).

The top 48 declared marks in each event will advance to the 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field West Regional which will be held May 26-28 in Lawrence, Kan., on the campus of University of Kansas.

A select group of Lions will compete in the West Coast Last Chance Open on May 14 and the Portland Twilight on May 15 as they seek to lower those potential NCAA West Regional qualifying times.
