LOS ANGELES - The Loyola Marymount men's and women's track teams fared well at the Occidental Invitational with a limited squad. Freshman Cameron Pagett highlighted the weekend, as his 5000m time was among LMU's top-2 times in the event.
Pagett saved the best for last to close out his already impressive freshman season. Competing in the men's 5000m, Pagett was looking to improve upon his freshman record of 15:18.32, which he set a month earlier. Pagett got out to a fast start, coming through the first mile in 4:44 then settling into a nice rhythm. After slowing a bit towards the end, Pagett gave a valiant effort over the last 600m, closing with a 33-second last 200m to cross the line in 15:04.28. His time was a huge 14-second personal best and trails only sophomore Trevor Wiseman's 14:58.57 on the Lions' all-time list.
The next event for the Lions was the men's long jump. Freshman Keyon Mitchell had a strong performance with a jump of 22'4.25", which placed him fourth overall. Mitchell also competed in the triple jump, leaping to a mark of 42"7.5", which was good for 15th overall.
In the women's 1500m, junior Laura Mickelson placed 15th overall with a time of 4:46.56. The race served as her final tune-up for the NCAA West Regional Championships, where she will compete in the 5000m in hopes of making a return trip to the NCAA National Championship.
