Erdmann and Johnson Set School Records at Willamette
Several personal marks fall at final regular season meet
May 16, 2011
Salem, Ore. - Tara Erdmann set a new school and meet record in the 1500m to lead the charge of seven LMU runners who competed on Saturday at the West Coast Invitational at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. Tyre Johnson was the overall winner of the men's 10K in a new school record while Cynthia Chaidez and Drew Dalton also set personal bests at the meet.
Erdmann posted the 19th-fastest time in the West Region this year in the 1500m, eclipsing her own previous school record of 4:24.54 by winning the race in 4:20.40. Her time also broke the Charles Bowles Track stadium record of 4:24.13, set by Marla Runyan in 1999. The result gives Erdmann three events - 1500m, 5000m, and 10,00m - for which she has a top-20 time in the West and potential qualifying mark for the NCAA West Regional.
In the same race, Sheree Shea ran the second-fastest 1500m of her life, just missing her personal record of 4:31.04 by placing eighth in 4:32.81. Cynthia Chaidez, running in her final collegiate race, posted a personal best of 4:42.31 to finish 11th.
Making her 10K debut, Brieanna Delaney finished second among collegiate runners and third overall in 35:35.74. Her time is the 65th-fastest in the West Region this season, with the top 64 declared runners qualifying for the regionals.
On the men's side, Johnson cruised to victory in the 10K by nearly 30 seconds, setting a new school record of 30:28.88, which tops his previous personal best of 30:42.51 run last month at the Mt. SAC Relays. His time is 79th-fastest in the West, giving him an outside chance of qualifying for the regionals.
In the men's 1500m, Drew Dalton set a new PR and ran the fifth-fastest time in LMU history at 3:53.87 to finish eighth in the race. Weston Strum was also in action, placing sixth in the 5K in 14:35.31.
The selections for the 2011 NCAA West Regionals will be announced on Thursday, May 19. The meet will be held Thursday, May 26-Saturday, May 28 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
