Provo, Utah - When Laura Mickelson and Sara Mickelson took to the track Friday at the NCAA Western Regionals in Provo, Utah, they were already making LMU history in several ways. It marked the first time the Lions had qualified runners for the NCAA track regionals. And this all came in just the first officially sanctioned track season at LMU.

But by the time the dust had cleared from their 5000m event, there was even more to add to the LMU record books. Laura Mickelson's time of 17:16.59 was good for a fourth place finish and qualified her for the NCAA Championship.

The sophomore now advances to the national championships, to be held June 7-10 at the Alex G. Spanos Athletic Complex on the campus of Sacramento State. She is one of 20 women in the nation to advance in the 5000m event, with the top five finishers from the western regional earning the automatic berth.

The western regional boasts 18 teams competing on the women's side. Laura Mickelson was the top finisher in the 5000m from outside the Pac-10 conference.

LMU does not field a full track and field team and only sent the Mickelson twins to run the one 5000m event. But because the NCAA regional is a scored meet, Laura Mickelson's finish was enough to earn the Lions five points. So after five scored events in the two-day competition, LMU is in 13th place, ahead of teams including host BYU, UC Santa Barbara, Hawaii, and Northern Arizona.

With today's automatic berth, LMU will have two teams competing for a national title in early June. Laura Mickelson will join LMU golf, which will play for the national championship in Oregon.

Sara Mickelson finished 13th in a time of 17:51.09. The sisters had entered the regional as the event's fifth and 13th seeds.

A portion of the four-day national championship will be televised on CBS and CSTV. For more information, visit 2006 NCAA Track Championship Central.
