Lion Trio Concludes Season
Kayla de Bodnt, Danielle Shanahan and Kelli Capel closed out the 2015-16 season with their NCAA West Preliminary appearance.
LAWRENCE, Kan. - The 2016 outdoor track season came to a close for the Lions Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Division I West Preliminary at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan.
Times were slow across the board as inclement weather has plagued the meet since it was scheduled to begin Thursday. The entire Thursday slate was forced to be rescheduled due to thunderstorms, rain and wind. The alteration pushed Kayla de Bondt’s 1,500m race to Saturday morning.
The senior competed in the second of four heats, finishing 42nd overall in 4:38.90. The top two finishers from each heat, plus the next best four times advanced to the NCAA Championships.
LMU’s two other competitors, Danielle Shanahan and Kelli Capel, closed things out in the 5,000m run. Shanahan placed eighth in the first of two heats and finished 14th overall in 16:30.56. The junior would sit just two spots out of advancing to the NCAA Championships as the two five from each heat plus the next best two times moved on.
Capel, running in her final collegiate meet, placed 37th overall in 17:21.48.
This year marked the fourth consecutive year, and 10th overall in the 11 years of sponsoring women’s track (and since the re-establishment of the men’s program), that the Lions advanced athletes into the NCAA postseason.
