2017 NCAA West Region Preliminary Results

Austin Tex. – In the 38th individual NCAA appearance by a Lion since 2006, Senior Danielle Shanahan punched her ticket Saturday night to the NCAA Championship in 5,000 meters at the NCAA West Region Preliminary.

Twelve (12) runners of the top 48 runners in the West Region along with twelve (12) additional runners in the East Region qualify to compose the field of 24 in the Championship. Needing to place in the top five (5) in her section for an automatic bid, she coasted to a fourth (4th) place finish and had the fourth (4th) fastest time of the evening. Shanahan finished with a time of 16:33.71. She is the fifth (5th) Lion in history to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

During the regular season, she has qualified in the 1500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters for the West Region Preliminary, but chose to focus on the 5000m through the post season. Coming into the Preliminary, Shanahan was ranked sixth (6th) in the West Region and thirteenth (13th) nationally with her time of 15:50.77 from the Stanford Invitational in April.

Shanahan’s race at the Championship will be the 16th National Championship appearance by a Lion to include cross country, indoor and outdoor. Since the inception of Women’s Track & Field at LMU in 2006, Lady Lions will have been in six (6) Outdoor Championships over the short twelve (12) year history.

The NCAA Championships will be run at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The 5,000 meters will be run on Saturday, June 10th at 5:25pm Pacific.
