Sacramento, Calif. - In just the first season of track at Loyola Marymount, the Lions were represented at the 2006 NCAA Championships. Sophomore Laura Mickelson ran in the preliminary of the 5000m Wednesday and finished among the nation's top-25 in the event.
While Mickelson's time of 16:43.61 did not qualify her for the event finals, it did place her among the nation's top-25 in the event. Based on Wednesday's preliminary, Mickelson was 22nd overall. In her second heat, she finished 10th of 14 runners, ahead of runners from Notre Dame, Washington State, UC Santa Barbara, Arkansas, and Oral Roberts.
"It's always bittersweet at the end of course," LMU Head Coach Scott Guerrero said. "Laura ran a great race and her second fastest time of the season. She hung on as long as she could, but she just came up a little short."
The NCAA Championship appearance capped a storied season for the LMU cross country and track programs.
