LAST YEAR AT THE WEST COAST ALL-STAR MILE
LMU junior Drew Dalton finished with the fastest time for a collegiate entrant at the West Coast All-Star Mile last February. Dalton finished second overall in the race in 4:16.26, less than a second behind overall winner Ian Cronin who represented Brooks Racing.
The race was competitive from the start. Dalton's time of 4:16.26 beat the University of Portland's Tre Perry by more than a second and recent USC alum and Portland native John Carley by two seconds. Dalton's collegiate-best finish at the West Coast All-Star Mile, followed by the Lions win over the Pilots in men's basketball finished a great night for LMU in Portland.
LAST YEAR AT THE UW HUSKY CLASSIC
LMU alum Tara Erdmann finished the women's 3000 meter invitational run in 9:12.15 for the sixth best overall time at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. Erdmann's time was the third best time for a collegiate runner in the field. Tara competed in the 3000m at the Husky Classic last year finishing fourth overall. However, Erdmann cut her time in this year's event by more than six seconds. She ran on the same track again the prior March with a nearly identical time of 9:12.25.
RETURNING TO THE TRACK
Both Strum and Shea are running from redshirt seasons in 2012. Strum ran unattached at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite where he won the 1500-meters. The junior also recorded personal records in the 800-meter and the 1500-meter at the Beach Invitational last year, and a PR in the 5000m at the Oxy Invite, running unattached.
Shea did not run on the track last year. In her last competitive season, she won the Triton Invitational in the 1500-meters, the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers in the 3k, the Oxy Invitational in the 5k, and the prestigious Stanford Invitational in the 5k, setting personal bests at each race. She finished fourth in the mile at the highly competitive Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Heptathlon with a time of 4:55.65.
ABOUT THE WEST COAST ALL-STAR MILE
One of the most popular in-game promotions over the years for the University of Portland's men's basketball program is the Halftime Mile. Members of the University's nationally-renowned distance track program will compete against local and regional competitors in a mile race at halftime on the Chiles Center upper mezzanine track.
Portland freshman Izaic Yorks, whose 4:04 time in the 1,600-meter run was tops among all high school runners nationally last year, will be one of Portland's featured runners.
ABOUT THE UW HUSKY CLASSIC
The Husky Classic is open to all Division I athletes and teams. This two-day event will contest DMRs, 5ks, 200s, Weight Throws, and the B section of the Vault on Friday evening. Saturday's event will feature highly competitive fields starting at 8:00 am, ending approximately at 6:00 pm.
