LOS ANGELES, Calif. - LMU's Tara Erdmann and Sheree Shea have continually stood out on the cross country course and track, and now have also been honored for their achievements in the classroom as well. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Erdmann and Shea to the 2010 All-Academic Honorees.
A total of 99 female student-athletes from Division 1 programs across the nation were named to the All-Academic list. Loyola Marymount University was one of two West Coast Conference schools to make the list, San Francisco was the only other school from the WCC to have an athlete receive all-academic honors. Additionally this is also the first year that LMU has had two athletes honored by the Association for Academic and Athletic Achievement.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2010.
A total of 99 student-athletes represent 62 institutions that compose the group. Syracuse led all teams with five All-Academic nods while Florida State followed with four. Among all conferences, the Big East picked 16 plaudits while the Big 12 was next in line with 15.
Six of the top ten finishers at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status, including Reid, Jordan Hasay (Oregon), Risper Kimaiyo (UTEP), Lucy Van Dalen (Stony Brook), Holly Van Dalen (Stony Brook), and Amanda Marino (Villanova). In addition, six of nine NCAA Regional Champions from the 2010 season earned All-Academic standing.
Sheila Reid of Villanova University was named the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2010 cross country season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Reid was the individual national champion at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall and led the Wildcats to a team national title as well.
