Track Season Gets Underway at West Coast Quad
The Lions hit the track Sunday in Orinda, Calif., at the West Coast Quadrangular and West Coast Relays.
LOS ANGELES - LMU’s 2016 outdoor track season officially begins Sunday as the Lion men and women hit the track for the West Coast Quadrangular and the West Coast Relays, held at Miramonte High School in Orinda, Calif.
Four events will be contested on the day, including a 3k, 200m, distance medley relay and 100m, and will be contested between four West Coast Conference rivals – LMU, Saint Mary’s, Santa Clara and San Francisco.
The season-opening meets got the Lions off to a strong start last spring as Danielle Shanahan won the 3,000m in school record time and the LMU women set a school record in the DMR for the second consecutive year. Shanahan, a junior, is coming off a stellar cross country season which saw her first NCAA Championship appearance. She is one of three Lion women returning this spring after earning NCAA Regional bids in 2015. Senior Kelli Capel and junior Kayla de Bondt round out that group.
While the women’s team is led by experience, the men’s team sports an underclassman heavy roster. Freshman Koby Pederson and sophomore Christopher Fredlund were two to the top five finishers at the 2015 WCC Cross Country Championship while senior Brandon Vientos was LMU’s top 3k finisher at last spring’s West Coast Quadrangular. Seniors Lance Capel and Michael Duncan are also back for one final track season.
