After a long process that began near the end of her junior year, La Mirada High School senior Stephanie Felix has chosen where she will be running next season.
The reigning Daily News Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year recently announced she will be heading to Loyola Marymount in the fall.
"There were a few weeks where I wasn't sure where I would be going," Felix said. "I had a lot of options, but ultimately Loyola Marymount had the best offer."
Felix, who maintains a 4.3 GPA, accepted a full scholarship and plans on participating in cross country and track.
She had taken official visits to LMU and Stanford and an unofficial trip to USC and was courted by several other schools, including Long Beach State.
"I really wanted to stay in state," Felix said. "I thought that Loyola's athletic and academic programs were the strongest. I also wanted a small-school feel."
Felix joins a strong Lions cross country program that is coming off a 15th-place finish last fall at the NCAA Western Regional, ahead of traditional powers such as USC and UCLA.
LMU finished third in the West Coast Conference.
In track and field, however, Felix joins a program in its infancy. LMU is competing this spring for only the third year in school history.
Felix is a two-time CIF-State qualifier at 3,200 meters, having finished seventh (10 minutes, 55.18 seconds) in 2006 and 16th (10:59.87) in 2007.
Felix also was a CIF-State qualifier in cross country her junior year, when she was ninth in 18:09.
An injury before league finals cut short her senior cross country season.
