Los Angeles, Calif - After a successful run at the West Coast Track Challenge, LMU Men's and Women's Track Team will compete at the 2009 Ben Brown Track and Field Invitational March 6-7. Loyola Marymount will be competing in the Invitational session on Saturday March 7.
Saturday's competition is divided into three sections, the field events, the running events, and the distance carnival. The Lions will be competing in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, 400 meter hurdles, 1500 meters, and 5000 meters. The majority of the team will be competing in the 5000 meters.
"We have a lot of freshmen for whom this will be the first crack at that event." Head Coach Scott Guerrero said. "The goal is to have them compete well and get them some experience at the distance."
Experience was not necessary as LMU Track competed at the West Coast Track Challenge. Facing WCC rivals Pepperdine and San Diego, LMU dominated the competition winning 3 of the 4 dual meets, 10 individual honors, as well as setting a school record in the Distance Medley Relay (10:38.94). Junior Keyon Mitchell accounted for the most team points winning the 100m (11.53) and the 200m (22.95) in personal record times.
"Our returners have been looking very good in practice and even though this is the first real test of the season, I would not be surprised to see a number of personal records set." Guerrero commented. "Our overall goal is always to see our kids improve so if that happens in the first meet of the season, then I think we would be satisfied."
LMU Track will begin competition at noon on Saturday in Fullerton, CA.
