Erdmann to Race in Indoor Track National Championships

March 9, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - This weekend, Senior Tara Erdmann will once again take the national stage at the NCAA Indoor National Championship in College Station, Texas. Erdmann qualified for her fifth national championship in the 3000m for Indoor Track this past weekend at the Last Chance Qualifier hosted by the University of Washington and will compete in the 3000m National Championship event this coming Saturday evening.

Indoor track is a relatively new activity for Erdmann. After successful outdoor track seasons as a freshman and sophomore, Erdmann raced two indoor races last spring to get some early racing experience and to test out the different racing venue. Even though these races are early in her training for the spring season, Erdmann excelled to the top of the contenders and just missed qualifying for the 2010 National Championships.

This spring, Erdmann once again raced at the Husky Indoor Classic where she tied her previous personal best of 9:18. Then in only her fourth indoor track race ever, Erdmann set a new school record and personal best for the 3000m in 9:12.25 the Last Chance Qualifier hosted by the University of Washington. This performance was under the automatic time to qualify Erdmann for her first Indoor Championship and her fifth National Championship appearance.

This weekend Erdmann is once again up against some of the top competition in the nation. Only seventeen females qualified for the 3000m race including Lucy Van Dalen of Stony Brook, Sheila Reid of Villanova and Jordan Hasay from Oregon. Erdmann currently holds the tenth fastest time in the nation. Additionally Erdmann will be racing against athletes from top track schools Washington, Stanford, Tennessee, Providence and Florida State from across the nation. Erdmann is the only West Coast Conference female athlete to qualify for the indoor championship.

With only four indoor races to cite as experience, Erdmann still seems cool under the pressure of another National Championship, "I am excited to race on the Indoor track, even though it is pretty crazy to think that it is only my fifth indoor track race ever." Continuing a stellar cross country season, where Erdmann earned All-American honors with a top 25 finish at NCAA Cross Country National Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana, she has shown no signs of slowing down. This weekend will be new and familiar all in the same, and for Erdmann yet another elite race where she continues to compete with the best.
