LOS ANGELES - The meat of the 2014 outdoor season beings this week for the LMU men's and women's track teams as the squad splits up and heads to the Oxy Distance Classic on Friday in Eagle Rock, Calif., and the Ben Brown Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.

This weekend's meets will be significant for a pair of freshmen, Grant Lapovich and Danielle Shanahan. At Friday's Oxy Distance Classic, Lapovich will compete in the 3,000m steeplechase for the first time in his running career.

Shanahan, meanwhile, will race in the 5,000m for the first time ever on Saturday at Cal State Fullerton. Her longest track race to date was the 3,200m raced during her prep career. The LMU freshman record in the 5,000m is 16:47, held by All-American Tara Erdmann.

LMU Sports Network sat down with Lapovich and Shanahan to hear their thoughts on the upcoming weekend.

Meet information and results can be found at oxyathletics.com and flashwest.com.
